Whatchamacallit

What are those liturgical objects called?

Liturgical Whatchamacallits

Ever wonder what the "smoke-swinger" or the "golden sun" is actually called? Here is a quick guide:

  • Thurible: The metal vessel on a chain used for burning incense.
  • Monstrance: The vessel (often shaped like a sun) used to display the Blessed Sacrament for adoration.
  • Aspergillum: The wand or brush used to sprinkle holy water.
  • Ciborium: The chalice-like container with a lid used to hold the consecrated hosts.
  • Chasuble: The outermost vestment worn by the priest during Mass.
